Massimo Group Installs an Automated Production Line

The wheels on the growth train keep on turning at Massimo Group. The Texas-based maker of UTVs, ATVs, and pontoon boats hasn’t filed its second-quarter results yet, but we know some of this year’s revenue has gone into a factory expansion and a new automated production line for the ATVs and UTVs.

The company has added a 90,000-square-foot expansion to its assembly facility in Garland, Texas, taking the total area to 376,000 square feet. Making use of that room, a robotic production line sees automated guided robots (AGRs) following a preprogrammed route along a series of robotic assembly stations. The technology isn’t new to manufacturing, used for years by automakers and truck makers, but we haven’t heard of another powersports installing this kind of automation.

Each of Massimo’s robots, basically a self-guided dolly, supports a single UTV or ATV through the build process. The dollies don’t move on a track, they roll on a regular flat floor, can be controlled individually, and can be pulled from the line at will. The idea is to increase production by 50 percent while improving unit quality, lowering labor costs, and providing greater safety for human workers at the same time.

Massimo Group CEO David Shan said, “We believe with the increased operating efficiencies from the new automated assembly robot line, we can further enhance margins while continuing to grow our revenue and expand our product line with new models and capabilities.”

Some of the savings will go into growing the current range of four UTVs and five ATVs, assuming all works out. The group already added two models this year, the Massimo MSA 600 and MSA 1000 ATVs, and the 1000 UTV.

Sounds like more automation is coming too. Shan said, “After assembly, accessorizing, and inspection on the new production line, our facility will be outfitted to efficiently palletize and shrink-wrap ATVs and UTVs, enabling the shipment of most orders to stores or distributors within three days.”
