A new wave of MG models is coming through, and the recently launched MG HS is out to claim its size of the mid-sized SUV pie.
There’s no shortage of rivals though, one of which is the Haval H6.

Buyers are voting with their wallets this year. Haval has sold 5926 examples of the H6, while MG has shifted just 2287 units of the HS.
However, the previous HS accounted for most of those sales, and by our reckoning the fresh model is a step forward.

Drivetrains and efficiency
Both models share a similar powertrain, but the H6 brings more grunt to the table with an extra 25kW and 45Nm. That’s especially useful from a towing perspective.

However, it comes at the cost of efficiency. The MG consumes 0.5L less fuel per 100km on average, although the Haval has a bigger fuel tank to offset that.
The H6 will also be cheaper to refuel, as it can run on 91 RON unleaded petrol.

Servicing and warranty
MG offers the longest warranty in Australia. Mitsubishi offers a 10 year warranty as well, but it’s contingent on servicing in the dealer network and runs 50,000km shorter than the MG coverage.
Although it’s three years short on warranty, the Haval is a more affordable proposition over a shorter ownership period.
The H6 is $594 cheaper to service over the first five years, with near-identical service intervals.

Safety
The new HS is yet to be tested by ANCAP or Euro NCAP, and is therefore unrated. MG says it’s “confident” the new model will achieve a high safety rating once it has been assessed.
The GWM Haval H6 has a five-star safety rating from ANCAP, based on testing conducted in 2022.
It received an adult occupant protection rating of 90 per cent, a child occupant protection rating of 88 per cent, a vulnerable road user protection rating of 73 per cent, and a safety assist rating of 81 per cent.

The MG HS is a newer car and it shows when you dive into the equipment lists. With that said, Haval has thrown all the fruit at the Ultra, which sits at the top of the H6 trim grades (excluding hybrid models).

Stepping into the cabin of these competitors, it’s another win for the Haval.

It’s a significant upgrade in this regard, although quality of materials requires a subjective judgement.

The MG HS claws back some ground here, demonstrating its youth with a better rounded suite of technology.
You get a bigger infotainment screen with the second generation HS, and native satellite navigation is another point of difference.
That’s not to say the Haval doesn’t have unique features of its own – the H6 is the only car in this comparison to have a head-up display and wireless smartphone charger.
