There’s a new player making waves in the budget SUV world.

Since returning to Australia in 2023, Chery has flooded the market with affordable models with the aim of testing our loyalty to legacy brands and established Chinese rivals alike.

First there was the Omoda 5, then the family-friendly Tiggo 7 Pro and Tiggo 8 Pro Max. Now, we have the Tiggo 4 Pro, due in showrooms in October.

It’s both the smallest and cheapest model that Chery has introduced Down Under, priced from just $23,990 drive-away.

That’s cheaper than rivals such as the MG ZSKia StonicMitsubishi ASX, and GWM Haval Jolion.

It also massively undercuts the Mazda CX-3, a segment staple. With $3000 separating the flagship Tiggo 4 Pro Ultimate and base CX-3 Sport, does the Japanese carmaker have something to worry about?

Pricing

The new Chery Tiggo 4 Pro hits the Australian market with ultra-sharp pricing that ranks it among the cheapest SUVs in the country.

In top Ultimate specification, the Chery is still $3000 cheaper than the base CX-3, which is currently available for $29,990 drive-away as part of a limited time deal.

Drivetrains and efficiency

The Chery and Mazda are very different propositions from a powertrain perspective, sharing little in common, cylinder count aside.

While both cars generate a similar peak power figure, the Tiggo 4 Pro is turbocharged, with 15Nm of extra peak torque.

In addition, the CX-3 has a standard torque-converter automatic transmission, whereas the Chery features a continuously variable transmission. But which powertrain is better?

Well, the CX-3 motor is significantly more efficient, and produces less pollution than the Chery powerplant. Both those factors give the Mazda the edge here.

Dimensions

Chery’s new ‘baby’ SUV is bigger than the CX-3 across every dimension.

That extends to interior space – the Tiggo 4 Pro has 116L of extra boot space, although the Mazda gains more cargo room with the rear seats folded down.

Servicing and warranty

It’s difficult to make a judgement on running costs, as Chery hasn’t yet announced the servicing schedule for the Tiggo 4 Pro.

However, we do know that Chery offers a longer warranty, with extended roadside assist.

Both manufacturers cap service pricing for the first seven years.

Safety

Neither of these vehicles has a current ANCAP safety rating – the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro is yet to receive a safety rating from ANCAP or its European counterpart Euro NCAP, while the Mazda CX-3 is unrated by ANCAP as its five-star rating from 2015 has now expired.

With that said, the Chery has much more in the way of standard active safety and driver assist technology.

Over the Mazda, the Tiggo 4 Pro brings lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, a surround-view camera, and driver attention monitoring.

Most of those features can be had with the CX-3, you’ll just have to spend more to get a higher-spec example.

Here’s a breakdown of the standard safety equipment on each car:

Standard features

The Tiggo 4 Pro comes out on top in just about every category here, starting with exterior features.

Exterior Chery Tiggo 4 Pro Ultimate Mazda CX-3 Sport
Wheels 17-inch alloy wheels 16-inch alloy wheels
Spare wheel Space saver Space saver
Headlights Automatic LED Halogen
Rear fog lights Yes No
Wipers Rain-sensing Manual
Side mirrors Heated, power-folding Power-folding
Sunroof Power sunroof No
Tailgate Manual Manual

Driving at night or in the wet can be tricky at the best of times, and the Chery is better equipped for such situations with automatic LED headlights, rear fog lights, and rain-sensing wipers.

From a comfort perspective, the base CX-3 also goes without a sunroof which is standard on the flagship Tiggo 4 Pro.

Front seats Heated, power-adjustable Manually adjustable
Rear seats Fixed Fixed
Steering wheel Leatherette Leatherette
Gear selector Leatherette Leatherette
Paddle shifters No No
Rear-view mirror Auto-dimming Standard
Climate control Dual-zone Standard air-conditioning

Moving into the cabin of these two SUV rivals, Chery trumps Mazda on the spec sheet again.

While some buyers may have a preference for cloth upholstery over leatherette, it’s tough to argue that heated, power-adjustable seats and dual-zone climate control aren’t valuable upgrades over the basic manual seats and air-conditioning in the CX-3.

Chery brings the freshest tech to a segment that often misses out on the latest and greatest.

Compared to the old-school CX-3, with its analogue speedometer and USB-A outlets, the Tiggo 4 Pro brings dual 10.25-inch screens and a pair of USB-C outlets.

Would you pick the tried and tested CX-3, or take a chance on the kitted out Tiggo 4 Pro?
